Tensions Rise as Ter Stegen Refuses Barcelona’s Medical Request

Most recently, Ter Stegen reportedly refused to sign a consent form for his medical data to be shared with LaLiga. Due to the German goalkeeper's stance, Barcelona is reportedly considering various legal alternatives to resolve the matter. On July 29, 2025, the 33-year-old goalkeeper underwent lower back surgery. The form Barcelona wants to submit to LaLiga will impact the decision on whether the emergency injury rule applies to Ter Stegen's case.
If LaLiga approves, Barcelona will only have to pay 50 percent of the player's salary. This rule applies if the player is out for at least four months. However, this must be agreed to by the player. In this case, Ter Stegen's refusal to sign the form prevented Barcelona from receiving 50 percent of his salary.
Barcelona sporting director Deco had originally planned to speak with Stegen after returning from Barcelona's Asia tour on Tuesday. However, Deco was surprised to receive an official fax from Stegen, refusing to sign the form. This situation further complicated Stegen's relationship with Barcelona. The club had actually intended to let the player leave this summer.
Espanyol goalkeeper Joan Garcia has also been contacted by Barcelona, who will make Garcia their number one goalkeeper. Barcelona has also decided to renew the contract of veteran Wojciech Szczesny.
Career Journey
Ter Stegen began his footballing journey at Borussia Mönchengladbach's academy. His extraordinary talent was immediately apparent, and he quickly rose through the youth ranks, eventually making his debut for the first team in 2011. At a young age, Ter Stegen already displayed the qualities of a top goalkeeper: quick reflexes, courage in one-on-one situations, and the ability to distribute the ball well. His impressive performances have made him a first-choice goalkeeper for Gladbach and attracted the attention of Europe's top clubs.
In 2014, Ter Stegen made a major career breakthrough by joining FC Barcelona. Initially, he shared a role with Claudio Bravo, with Ter Stegen primarily playing in the Copa del Rey and Champions League, while Bravo played in La Liga. Despite this, Ter Stegen demonstrated his quality at every opportunity, displaying his expansive vision and increasingly honed sweeper-keeper skills.
Over time, Ter Stegen cemented his place as Barcelona's starting goalkeeper. He became an irreplaceable figure between the sticks, renowned for his crucial saves, composure on the ball, and ability to build attacks from the back with precise passes. Barcelona's footballing philosophy, which prioritizes possession, perfectly suited Ter Stegen's playing style.
Modern Playing Style and Crucial Contributions
Ter Stegen is the prototype of the modern goalkeeper. He is not only a skilled shot-stopper but also possesses exceptional footwork, allowing him to play an active role in the team's ball circulation. His ability to read the game and come out of his own half to intercept opponents' passes makes him an effective "sweeper keeper".
His contribution to Barcelona has been significant. He has helped the club win numerous titles, including several La Liga and Champions League titles. His spectacular saves in crucial matches have often been decisive for the team.
Despite being one of the best goalkeepers in the world, Ter Stegen faces stiff competition for the German national team from Manuel Neuer. Despite his consistent performances at club level, Neuer, due to his status and experience, is often the first choice. However, Ter Stegen remains a valuable asset to the national team and is always ready to give his best whenever given the opportunity.***
